Tigers’ Burrow, Gophers Winfield Earn Walter Camp Awards

LSU QB Joe Burrow completed 31-of-39 passes for 393 yards and three touchdowns as the second-ranked Tigers defeated third-ranked Alabama, 46-41. Those numbers helped him earn Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week. 

Burrow had scoring passes of 33, 29, and 13 yards the Tigers improved to 9-0, 5-0 SEC. He also ran for 64 yards. He earned the award for the second time this season (Sept. 8th) He is the 10th tiger to earn the award since 2004.

“We’re not done yet,” said the Athens, Ohio native. “It’s game nine. We’ve got three more regular season games to go and the SEC Championship. This was never our goal, we’ve got bigger goals.”

On the Defensive side it was Antoine Winfield who posted 11 tackles (9 solo) and made two key interceptions as the 13th ranked Minnesota Golden gophers defeated fourth-ranked Penn State, 31-26.

His two interceptions led to 14 points. He now has 7 interceptions on the season, a school record that ties Jeff Wright (1970).

With the victory, Minnesota improved to 9-0, 6-0 in the Big Ten.  It was the Gophers’ first win at home over a top-five team since a shutout of No. 1 Michigan in 1977.

The Redshirt Sophomore from Woodlands, TX. Is the second Gopher to earn the award. the other being linebacker Nate Triplett (Sept.13 2009)

About the Award: This is the 16th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.
