Big West Board of Directors moves to postpone Fall sports competition through the end of the calendar year.

IRVINE, Calif. – The Big West Conference Board of Directors announced today that Fall sports competition would be postponed through the end of the calendar year.  The impacted Fall sports at CSUB are men’s and women’s soccer, cross country, indoor volleyball, and women’s golf.  It should be noted that the women’s golf team is only affected for the fall portion of its competitive schedule.

The health and safety of the conference’s scholar-athletes, coaches, staff, and campus community remained the driving factor toward Wednesday’s conclusion and a decision on the feasibility of Fall sports competitions moving to the spring will come at a later date.  The return to campus of student-athletes for conditioning, training, and practice is allowed for Big West institutions, but those activities must continue to follow strict compliance with NCAA regulations, institutional policies, and public health guidelines.

“The health and safety of our student-athletes will continue to be the priority in any decisions we make,” said Dr. Kenneth “Ziggy” Siegfried, CSUB’s Athletics Director. “I am heartbroken for all of our student-athletes who compete in the fall.  Having said that, we are optimistic that our student-athletes will have the opportunity to train, condition, and practice in the fall to be prepared for when competition returns, as long as health conditions allow.”

“I know the decision made today was an agonizing one for all involved, but I have no doubt that it was the right one.  The global COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a serious concern for the health and safety of our scholar-athletes and many more.”

The CSUB winter sports of men’s basketball, women’s basketball, indoor track and field, swimming and diving, and wrestling are not affected by this decision.
