Although summer is nearly over, summer reading does not have to end. The Kern County Library is still open with a curbside pick-up service.
You must have a library card. You can register quickly here:
https://www.kerncountylibrary.org/get-a-library-card/. It will grant you access to eBooks and other internet resources. In order to check out physical materials, you must convert your card.
A confirmation email is sent to you and provides details on how to do so. Essentially, you must schedule a time to convert it. CA license or ID will be needed. For minors 17 and under, a guardian must be present to finalize the application and bring proof of identity, proof of residency, and signed acknowledgment of financial responsibility.
Once this is all done, library members can begin checking out books.
The first step is to request items through the library catalog. This is done through the ValleyCat catalog domain. The system will automatically notify you if they are available.
A simple online form must be completed to schedule an appointment to pick up your books. There are seven branch locations to choose from: Arvin, Beale, Delano, Kern River Valley, Ridgecrest, Taft, and Tehachapi.
The last step is to pick up. There are signs posted in the parking area. A phone number will be provided to call while you wait in your car. Then, your items are brought to you. Do not forget you library card. Library staff will deliver your materials to the trunk and/or rear of your vehicle.
Return is contact-free, as well. The library is accepting returns through the book drops at all 24 locations across the County. Returned items will still show as checked out on your account while undergoing a 3-day quarantine process before staff can safely check them in. So, be sure to not wait until the due date. This preserves the safety of the staff and the community.
Safety is a prime concern. Kern County library staff have received proper training and have the personal protective equipment that is necessary. All employees wear face coverings according to the CDC and County recommendations. Of course, social distancing is practiced.
