University of Texas QB Sam Ehlinger and Louisiana linebacker Ferrod Gardner earned this years first Walter Camp FBS Player of the week award.
Ehlinger help lead the Longhorns to a 59-3 win over UTEP in the season opener. The Senior QB from Austin completed 25-of-33 passes for 428 yards and five touchdowns as Texas rolled to a 59-3 season-opening victory over UTEP. All five of Ehlinger’s touchdown passes came in the first half.
Coming out of Westlake high in Texas he broke most records held by two Super Bowl winning quarterbacks Drew Brees and Nick Foles. He is expected to be a high draft selection in the next NFL Draft. He also was the last Longhorn to win the award in 2018.
Gardner had nine tackles and one quarterback sack as Louisiana defeated 23rd-ranked Iowa State, 31-14, in the season opener for both teams. It was the Ragin’ Cajuns first road win over top-25 opponent in school history. He and Tyrell Enroy (October 5, 2008) are the only two Ragin Cajun’s to win the Award . The senior from Dayton also earned the same honor in the Sunbelt Conference.
The Walter Camp Foundation is a non-profit based in New Haven, Connecticut. This is the 17th year it honors one offensive and one defensive player of the week during the regular season. The recipients are selected by national media members and administered by the Foundation.
