The saying on “any given Sunday” is part of a saying that any team can win any Sunday in the NFL. That was the story last week at Sofi stadium as the Rams (9-5) fell to the once winless New York Jets(1-13).
The Rams high powered Defense ranked in the top of league in most defensive categories did its best but the as the day .
The hapless New Yorkers were coming off a 40-3 loss to Seattle went right down the field on its opening drive on its first drive and Sam Donald hit a Ty Johnson for a 18 yard touchdown that ended a 75 yard 13 play drive. It was the eight straight game they scored on the opening possession. Today it led to a build up a 17-3 lead.
“They came in here ready to go,” said Sean McVay they made enough plays to win the game.”
As the day went on this was a Ram team that pay to solid back to back games winning by double digits against Arizona and New England. They appeared to have bit of a rhythm going as a team.
The start of the third was the same as the start of the game theJets took second half kick-off and drove 72 yards on 11 plays. SoCal native Sam Donald connected on three 20 plus yard passes and then age-less Frank Gore took it in from the one yard line.
The offense was inconsistent sputtered at times but after trailing 20-3 in the third put together Goff and company put together a quick 75 yard drive taking just 2:21 that included big plays with a 44 yard catch by Tyler Higbee, an 11-yard run by Cam Ackers after returning from a leg injury.
Goff was 22 of 34 on the day for 209 yards 2 TDs and an interception. That gave him a 80.9 QBR.
“We didn’t execute we didn’t do a lot of things that we prepared to do” said Goff.
After a Sam Ficken field goal made it 23-10 in the third the RAMS appeared prime for a comeback when they had another 75 yard drive where Woods had a 40 yard run and there was a key defensive pass interference called on Bless Austin.
The RAMS made played solid holding the Jets to169 yards passing 289 yards of offense. It was the fifth time this season the Defense held a team under 200 yards
“We didn’t really get our cleats in the ground,” said RAMS safety Johnny Johnson. “That’s when we play our best -when everyone’s ready to go and were all set to play. I think they just moved around a lot of motion. Its just something we’ve got to get better at.
With the score 23-20 the RAM failed to convert on a when a 4thand four as Goff ‘s pass intended for Gerald Everett was knocked away by Marcus Maye.
The Jets ran out the clock with Gore getting a key first down.Gore is the only NFL player to rush for 500 yards in 15 consecutive seasons.
RAM NOTES: Robert Woods had a career long 40-yard run and six catches for 56 yards. Cam Akers will miss the upcoming game with the Seahawks due to a high ankle sprain. “He’s our war daddy but he’s going to be out for at least a week or so,” said Sean McVay.
