Thanks to donations from The Pearl Lowery Winters Society and Subaru, seniors were able to celebrate Christmas a few days early at the Bakersfield Senior Center (BSC).

The drive-thru event was held Wednesday, December 23, 2020 from 11:00am to 1:00pm.

Fifty festively decorated bags were donated to the seniors by The Pearl Lowery Winters Missionary Society (TPLWMS) of Cain African Methodist Church. Each bag included warm socks, face masks, hand sanitizer, toothpaste and toothbrushes, fruit, and hard candy.

“It’s our mission project to donate every year”, Dorene Taplin; (TPLWMS) Vice President said. “In the past, we would go Christmas caroling at various convalescents, but because of the pandemic we are unable to do so. “We chose to donate to BSC instead”, Taplin said

The seniors not only were given a “Warm Bag”, but were also given tote bags filled with food staples donated through the “Subaru Share the Love Event” which ends on January 2, 2021. And upon exiting the premises, lunch was provided for those seniors who have a membership with BSC.

Angela Bostick, President (TPLWM) stated that the women’s society’s motivation for donating is a mission project for the holidays.

“It’s our way to give back to our community”, Bostick said. “Usually we give away 75-100 food baskets every year, but because of COVID we chose to give gift bags this year.”

Shirley Hill, Volunteer and Worship Director of Cain AME Church stated, “We help people all over the world, not just in town”.

“It’s just something I could do to help the church, plus, it keeps me busy”. “I don’t like being stagnant,” Hill said.

Subaru sales representatives Trenton Lee and Erick Voss joined in to “share the love” and spread holiday cheer with the seniors by volunteering with the giveaway.

“It’s nice to lend a helping hand to those who need it,” Lee said. “It’s a good place to fill your cup; lots of positive energy”, plus, I get a free meal”, he said.

As with every event held at BSC, laughter and positive energy seems to be inevitable.

“It’s nice to see how everyone has a unique relationship with Lili”, Erick Voss said. “She knows everyone by name.”

“It’s about building relationships”, Lili Parker; BSC Executive Director, replied.
