In the face of growing challenges, Planned Parenthood Los Angeles (PPLA) is reaffirming its commitment to the Los Angeles community with the reopening of the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Health Center. After undergoing extensive renovations, the center opened its doors on May 27, offering a full range of sexual and reproductive health care services, including birth control, cancer screenings, STD testing and treatment, and abortion.

The reopening of the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Health Center is particularly significant as it will serve as an extension of PPLA’s Black Health Initiative. This initiative aims to reduce health disparities in Black communities, ensuring that historically underserved populations have access to high-quality, culturally competent care. The newly renovated center is strategically located in the heart of Baldwin Hills, Crenshaw, and Leimert Park, areas rich in history and culture.

Sue Dunlap, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, emphasized the importance of the reopening:

“Planned Parenthood Los Angeles has been offering compassionate, high-quality care to the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw community for 15 years and this expansion allows us to offer more of the services that our patients ask for. We will provide additional birth control options, syphilis testing and treatment, medication abortion, and behavioral health care to better meet the needs of the community.”

Jamila London, Owner and Principal Designer of London Interiors, who is a proud member of the local LA community and created artwork for the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Health Center, shares,

“As a native of Inglewood and Baldwin Hills, this project was personal. Designing the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Health Center meant creating a space that reflects the pride, culture, and history of the community that shaped me. I pulled from lived experience—drum circles in Leimert Park, African textiles, familiar faces. The fabrics, wall colors, and room names all honor our identity. In communities like ours, health care can feel distant. I wanted every detail to say, “You belong here.” This isn’t just a clinic—it’s a space for care, culture, and connection.”

The Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Health Center expansion will allow Planned Parenthood Los Angeles to bring care to more patients in the local area, many of whom face barriers when accessing health care. With PPLA providing over 260,000 patient visits every year, the organization remains one of the largest and most trusted health care providers in Los Angeles County.

Margot D. Taylor, Vice President of Strategy and Advocacy at PPLA, highlighted the center’s impact on local health equity:

“It is very exciting to be back at the Baldwin Hills- Crenshaw location. Having presence in the area will be impactful in efforts to reduce health disparities in communities of color.”

As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, PPLA’s expansion in the Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw area serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, offering critical services in an environment where all patients are seen, heard, and valued. The Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw Health Center is not just a health care facility, it’s a symbol of PPLA’s commitment to community health and its ongoing role in shaping a healthier, more equitable future for Los Angeles.
