Bruins “D-Up” The Rose Bowl

The BRUINS (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12) Defense forced nine punts and WSU had just 216 total yards.

“Our game plan was to get out there and let our front seven go,” UCLA defensive lineman Carl Jones Jr said. “For the most part, we did our job. He (Ward) got frustrated a lot.”

In a game that included high scoring offenses, it wasn’t good look early for UCLA as the offense couldn’t get going. However, the defense put the clamps on Washington State and that helped to secure a 25-17 win in front of some 43,740 fans at the ROSE BOWL.

Cam Ward is a high flying QB who averaged 347.2 passing yards and completed 74.5% of his passes in the first four games. He found it hard to get things going against the BRUINS defense.

The junior from West Columbia, Texas threw his first two interceptions of the season and completed just 19 of 39 for 197 yards and a touchdown.

“They were the best defense we’ve faced so far this year,” Ward said. “They got after us today. They punched us in the mouth early and they punched us in the mouth the majority of the game, so we’re humbled for sure.”

Jones along with Gabrial Murphy and Kain Madrano led the Defense with four tackles each.

The COUGS (4-1,1-1) had one lengthy scoring drive that came midway through the third quarter, when it went 74 yards in four plays to regain a 17-12 lead.

BRUINS QB Dante Moore did enough after a slow start that included two first half interceptions. The Freshman turned it around finished 22 of 44 for 290 yards and a touchdown.

He got help from Carson Steele who had his first 100-yard game as a Bruin bulling his way for 140 yards on 30 carries. “I felt like a running back today,” said Steele. “It felt great to contribute to the win”

Bruins trailed 17-12 going into the fourth quarter until they got a pair of touchdowns from Keegan Jones. The offense ran 97 plays, including 53 rushing attempts for 225 yards. The offense totaled 471yards.

Jones had three carries and two TD’s. He scored on a 13-yard run to put UCLA on up 18-17 just 1:32 into the fourth and he later scored after a Oluwafemi Oladjedo interception to add on the lead.
