A large crowd of music lovers descended upon Leimert Park Village for the 2nd Annual Barbara Morrison Jazz & Blues Festival, presented by the California Jazz & Blues Museum. This year’s festival presented an unforgettable experience for all in attendance.

“If you see something, Say Something!” Better yet, “ If you see something Do something!” These are words from the honorable, beloved, and late Congressmen John Lewis.

In a city as diverse and vibrant as Los Angeles, combating hate is more urgent than ever. Recent statistics in the LA County Hate Crimes Report, reveal a 13% rise in hate crimes from 2022, with particularly alarming increases in anti-Asian and LGBTQ+ hate crimes. Notably, incidents targeting the Black community have surged by 27%. These figures highlight the pressing need for a concerted and multifaceted approach to address and counteract hate.

In a world where hate crimes and social injustices are presently plaguing our communities, grassroots organizations like Community Interventions (CI) are stepping up to make a difference. Based in Bakersfield, CI is leading the charge with their powerful “Stop The Hate” campaign, designed to engage and protect the most vulnerable among us— youth living in underrepresented and divested neighborhoods who are particularly susceptible to hate crimes.

On the morning of August 24, 2024, the Bakersfield Chapter of Links Incorporated launched its inaugural class in the STEAM Academy for the new school year. I can’t contain my excitement for being able to attend the 13th Annual Uptown Jazz Festival, held on Saturday, August 3, 2024. The festival was held at Houghton Park, 6301 Myrtle Avenue, from 2 to 7 pm.
