The Los Angeles Chargers kicked off the 2025 NFL preseason in dominant fashion, cruising to a 34–7 victory over the Detroit Lions after capitalizing on five turnovers—including a fumbled opening kickoff.

Lance Makes a Statement

Former first-round pick Trey Lance led the way for the Bolts, making a strong case for the backup quarterback spot behind starter Justin Herbert. Lance completed 13 of 20 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns, showing poise and control throughout his time on the field. He committed no turnovers.

“He did a nice job,” said head coach Jim Harbaugh after the game. “He managed the offense, protected the football, and made plays when we needed them.”

Lance, now 25, is battling veteran Taylor Heinicke for the No. 2 role. Though Herbert is firmly entrenched as the franchise quarterback, Lance is hoping to revive his career after an unconventional start in the league.

A Journey Still Unfolding

Lance was once considered one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft. Coming out of North Dakota State, he had limited college experience but immense raw talent. His shot as the 49ers’ starter in 2022 ended early with a season-ending ankle injury. By the time he recovered, San Francisco had found success with rookie Brock Purdy, and Lance was soon the odd man out.

After two seasons as a backup in Dallas, Lance signed a one-year, $6.2 million deal with the Chargers. While a return to a starting role may not happen in L.A., he’s showing signs of growth under Harbaugh’s guidance.

Uiagalelei Makes Brief Debut

Late in the second half, Harbaugh turned to undrafted rookie DJ Uiagalelei. The former St. John Bosco standout completed 1 of 2 passes for 12 yards in limited action.

Uiagalelei was once a top high school recruit, earning USA Today Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2018. His college journey took him from Clemson to Oregon State and briefly to Florida State before signing with the Chargers earlier this year.

Lions Stumble Out the Gate

Detroit struggled throughout the night, committing five turnovers—including three interceptions and two special teams miscues.

“You want to win the game, and you want to play well—we didn’t do either,” said Lions head coach Dan Campbell. “That’s the frustrating part. But we’ll learn from it, coach off the tape, and be better next week.”

Looking Ahead

The Chargers will return to SoFi Stadium for their next preseason matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Saturday, August 10, at 1:05 p.m.
