Defense ruled the night in Tucson as Fresno State Bulldogs claimed the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl, outlasting Miami RedHawks 18-3 on Saturday at Casino Del Sol Stadium.
In a low-scoring contest that proved far tighter than last year’s bowl matchup, Fresno State leaned on a disciplined defense and timely quarterback play to dethrone the RedHawks, last season’s Arizona Bowl champions. The win capped a strong late-season push for the Bulldogs, who finished 9-4 in their first year under head coach Matt Entz.
Warner Earns MVP Honors
Quarterback EJ Warner was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after delivering a steady, mistake-free performance. Warner completed 15 of 22 passes for 219 yards, throwing one touchdown and committing no turnovers.
While the Bulldogs didn’t light up the scoreboard, Warner’s efficiency allowed Fresno State to control the game’s tempo and field position — a crucial factor in a contest dominated by defense and special teams.
Bulldogs Defense Sets the Tone
Fresno State’s defense was the story of the night.
The Bulldogs held Miami (Ohio) to just 192 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers, including an interception and a fumble recovery from Jakari Embry. Time and again, Fresno State disrupted the RedHawks’ rhythm, limiting big plays and shutting down scoring opportunities.
Miami, which had appeared in the last three Mid-American Conference championship games and entered the bowl season with momentum, struggled to find consistency. The RedHawks were held without a touchdown and managed only a single field goal in the loss.
Strong Finish to the Season
Saturday’s victory marked Fresno State’s fourth win in its final five games, a sign of growth and cohesion under Entz in his debut season. The Bulldogs’ 9-4 record underscores a campaign that gained strength as the season progressed and sets an encouraging foundation heading into the offseason.
Fresno State was one of seven teams from the Mountain West Conference to earn bowl invitations this postseason, highlighting the league’s continued depth and national presence.
Miami (Ohio), representing the Mid-American Conference, finished the season 7-7 after falling just short of defending its Arizona Bowl title.
Mountain West Bowl Results
Fresno State’s win was part of a busy bowl slate for the Mountain West, with mixed results across the conference:
Washington 38, Boise State 10 — LA Bowl
Washington State 34, Utah State 21 — Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Ohio 17, UNLV 10 — Frisco Bowl
Hawai‘i 35, Cal 31 — Hawai‘i Bowl
Minnesota 20, New Mexico 17 (OT) — Rate Bowl
A Statement Win
While the scoreboard reflected a defensive struggle, Fresno State’s Arizona Bowl victory sent a clear message. The Bulldogs proved they can win with physical defense, efficient quarterback play, and composure on a postseason stage.
For a program transitioning under new leadership, Saturday’s performance was more than just a bowl win — it was a statement that Fresno State remains a force in the Mountain West and a team to watch heading into next season.
