Hostage Situation at Chase Bank Building Concludes After Officer-Involved Shooting

Bakersfield Police Department says all hostages were located unharmed; traffic closures remain in effect downtown.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A hostage situation at the Chase Bank Building in downtown Bakersfield concluded early Wednesday morning following an officer-involved shooting involving Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel, according to an update released by the Bakersfield Police Department.

BPD said the incident ended at approximately 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3. The department stated that Bakersfield Police Department personnel were not involved in the use of force.

All hostages were located unharmed and received medical evaluation and treatment at the scene, according to the department.

The suspect involved in the incident was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities said a significant law enforcement presence will remain in the area for several hours while investigators process the scene.

Traffic closures are currently in effect between Truxtun Avenue and 18th Street, and between H Street and K Street. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area, seek alternate routes and expect delays until sometime this afternoon.

A follow-up press conference is tentatively planned for 10 a.m. at the front of the Bakersfield Police Department Headquarters.
