Los Angeles Rams rookie quarterback Simpson came out of the gate smoking in his first NFL game, helping lead the Rams to a preseason-opening victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The first-round pick completed 21 of 25 passes for 190 yards and two touchdown passes to Danm Connors, displaying poise and confidence in his first extended taste of NFL action.
The former Alabama standout showed plenty of composure as he helped rally the Rams to victory.
“I definitely felt more comfortable than I ever had coming into a game, but I also didn’t know what to expect,” Simpson said. “The guys did a great job. So happy for our team. And on to next week.”
Simpson Impresses McVay
Stetson Bennett, expected to back up Rams starter Matthew Stafford, opened the game and completed 4 of 6 passes for 36 yards in his lone quarter.
Then it was Simpson’s chance.
The rookie played more than two quarters in an extended first taste of the NFL and made the most of the opportunity.
“I thought he took what the defense gave him. I thought he read the plays out, read with his feet. I thought he did a really good job overall,” Rams coach Sean McVay said. “I thought he kept the ball in play. That’s the biggest thing, keeping the ball in play.”
Simpson’s performance gave the Rams plenty to feel good about as they continued evaluating their young players and roster depth during the preseason.
Smith Makes His Case
Xavier Smith also opened some eyes with his performance.
The Rams had experimented with Kyren Williams as a punt returner during practice, potentially putting Smith’s special teams role and roster chances under pressure.
Smith responded on game day.
His three punt returns included a 40-yard scamper that set up the Rams’ first touchdown. He also caught four passes for 26 yards.
The performance could strengthen Smith’s case for a roster spot as the preseason continues.
Connors Finds the End Zone
Danm Connors also made an impression, catching both of Simpson’s touchdown passes.
The Murrieta, California, native signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Houston. Connors previously played for Rice and Riverside City College.
He rushed for 977 yards during his senior season with the Cougars in the Big 12 and now has an opportunity to make his mark in Los Angeles.
Injury to Trost
The Rams also suffered an early injury when offensive tackle Keagen Trost, their third-round pick out of nearby Missouri, injured his hamstring in the first quarter.
The Rams will continue their preseason evaluation next week, but Simpson’s impressive debut, Smith’s special teams performance and Connors’ touchdown production provided several encouraging developments in the opener.
