The Los Angeles Rams opened their 2025 preseason with a 31-21 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, powered by a balanced offense and a strong rushing attack.
Fast Start on the Ground
The Rams scored on their first two possessions, both ending in touchdowns from second-year running back Blake Corum. After going scoreless as a rookie, Corum made the most of his opportunities, finishing with 32 rushing yards and two scores.
Quarterback Stetson Bennett benefited from the ground game’s success, completing 16 of 24 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
“I think just more mature, more comfortable in the system, tighter with the guys,” Bennett said. “With Rags [offensive coordinator Dave Ragone], day after day we’re just doing the same things—keep grinding, don’t get bored with the basics.”
Strong Showing Without Starters
Despite resting all starters, the Rams controlled the game, holding the ball for 33:20 and piling up rushing yards from multiple backs. Schrader led with 59 yards, rookie Jarquez Hunter added 41, and Corum chipped in his 32 yards.
On defense, Nate Valcarcel and Tony Fields II tied for a team-high nine tackles each.
Cowboys’ Backup QB Shines Before Injury
For Dallas, Joe Milton had a solid debut before leaving in the fourth quarter with an elbow injury. He went 17 for 29 for 143 yards, a touchdown, and one interception. Milton connected with Rivaldo Fairweather for an 8-yard touchdown pass with 8:48 to play as he looks to secure the backup role behind Dak Prescott.
Prescott and star receiver CeeDee Lamb were among several Cowboys starters held out. Linebacker Micah Parsons, who recently requested a trade amid contract talks, was on the sideline in street clothes.
New Era in Dallas
The game marked the head coaching debut of Brian Schottenheimer, a longtime assistant with stops at USC, the San Diego Chargers, and two stints with the St. Louis Rams. Schottenheimer spent the past two seasons as Dallas’ offensive coordinator before being named Mike McCarthy’s replacement in January.
McVay Praises Bennett’s Leadership
Rams head coach Sean McVay credited Bennett’s preparation and leadership for the team’s sharp offensive execution.
“It’s not a mistake why guys play their best when he’s leading the way for that room,” McVay said. “If there’s one positive from Matthew [Stafford] not being there, it’s that both Jimmy [Garoppolo] and Stetson have been able to get those valuable reps.”
