The Los Angeles Chargers have had several players stand out during preseason training camp, including first-round pick Akheem Mesidor from the University of Miami.
The 25-year-old edge rusher was a Sporting News second-team All-American last season and one of only two FBS players with at least 17.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. Mesidor was a key part of the Hurricanes’ defense as Miami advanced to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
The Chargers selected Mesidor with the No. 22 overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. His addition gives Los Angeles another talented pass rusher to work alongside veterans Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu.
That veteran presence could help Mesidor make an immediate impact as he adjusts to the NFL.
Jackson Making Plays
Another Charger who has shined during camp is veteran cornerback Donte Jackson.
Jackson has looked steady throughout camp and turned in one of his best practices of the summer earlier in the week when he intercepted two passes. He also recorded a pass breakup and has been active in the secondary throughout camp.
“D Jax doing D Jax things, man,” Jackson said with a smile. “Just finding my way around the ball.”
The ninth-year veteran later picked off DJ Uiagalelei toward the end of practice to cap a strong day.
Jackson had a team-best 12 passes defensed in 2025 and tied for the team lead with four interceptions during his first season with the Chargers. According to Pro Football Focus, Jackson allowed just 24 receptions among cornerbacks with at least 400 coverage snaps last season, the second-fewest among players in that group.
With Mesidor bringing youth and power to the pass rush and Jackson providing veteran experience in the secondary, the Chargers are getting encouraging signs from both sides of the defense as camp progresses.
The Chargers will travel to Houston this week for their preseason opener.
