USC linebacker Eric Gentry was honored with the Bednarik Award this week after a dominant performance in the Trojans’ 33-17 win over Purdue.

Gentry filled the stat sheet with eight solo tackles, including three for a loss of 19 yards, two sacks, and two forced fumbles—all career highs. His disruptive play consistently threw Purdue’s offense off rhythm, stalling the run game and forcing the Boilermakers into predictable passing situations.

Beyond the numbers, Gentry’s leadership and energy anchored USC’s defense, keeping the unit composed during key moments of the game.

“This game was a huge step in his return to form,” head coach Lincoln Riley said, praising Gentry as a cornerstone of the defense. Riley also awarded him a game ball in the locker room.

Gentry’s standout showing earned him national recognition, including a “helmet sticker” from ESPN’s College Football Final for being one of the week’s top performers.

A Prestigious Honor

The Bednarik Award, presented annually since 1995, is given to the College Defensive Player of the Year. Named for Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik—who starred as both linebacker and center for the Philadelphia Eagles—the award honors toughness, excellence, and leadership on the field.

By joining the list of Bednarik Award winners, Gentry further cemented his reputation as one of the nation’s most versatile and impactful defenders, and a key figure in USC’s pursuit of a Big Ten title this season.
