Hundreds attended a two-day service honoring the life, legacy, and service of beloved pastor and community leader, Dr. Freddie Louis Thomas Sr. The memorial service and public viewing was held Friday, July 5, 2024, at Jerusalem Mission Community Church of God In Christ and concluded with funeral services on Saturday, July 6, at Saint Peter Restoration Community Christian Ministries.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters Outraged at Supreme Court Decision Allowing for the Jailing, Fining of People Experiencing Homelessness

Today (Friday June 28, 2024), Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, released this statement following the Supreme Court’s ruling in the case of Gloria Johnson v. City of Grants Pass, Oregon to determine whether local government policies that ban sleeping or “camping” in public spaces without alternative shelter violate Constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Celebrates Youth Leadership Inaugural Class

In light of the inaugural class of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s Youth Leadership Institute (YLI), 18 young boys and girls were recognized for their dedication and achievements in the program. Upholding their motto, “By Culture and By Merit,” the women of AKA introduced the newest class of their Youth Leadership Institute, aiming to mentor young boys and girls into becoming productive citizens and future leaders. On the morning of June 2nd, amidst a gathering of family, supportive community members, and elected officials, the Seven Oaks Country Club at 2000 Grand Lakes Avenue was illuminated by the achievements of the Youth Leadership Institute’s inaugural class.

With triple-digit temperatures approaching, the Kern County Public Health Department is urging residents to protect themselves against the heat as high temperatures pose a substantial health risk, especially for vulnerable populations including young children, the elderly, those with chronic diseases or disabilities, and pregnant women.

Prevent Child Drownings: Public Health Recommends Water Watchers

With temperatures rising, many Kern County families may be trying to beat the heat by swimming in the backyard or taking trips to the beach and other recreational bodies of water. Because of this, the Kern County Public Health Department is urging adults to designate Water Watchers to supervise children during water activities.
