The non-profit organization, Pan African Film & Arts Festival (PAFF) is thrilled to announce its continued partnership with the global brand IKEA. The two came together to amplify the creative brilliance of Black artists from around the world as they unveil the 3rd installment of “All Artists Have a Seat at the Table” a unique campaign that not only shines a light on fine Black Art but also inspires collaboration in unlikely places while showcasing artists behind the work. The 2024 campaign launched February 8, at 6:00 pm with a red carpet opening and reception at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, 2nd floor, inside the Museum of African American Art. This glamorous event marked the official unveiling of the “All Artists Have a Seat at the Table” furniture presented by IKEA including a panel discussion by some of its featured artists. The annual event boasts an array of art lovers, film enthusiasts, and some of Hollywood’s top A-listers observing the beautiful artwork, and shopping for unique pieces to add to their collections.

Saturday, February 10th is planned to be a big day for Kern County in celebration and honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. named “The Celebration of a King and a Day of Service”. It will be hosted by Stay Focused Ministries and Bakersfield City School District and held at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School. This event is in collaboration with organizations like MLK Community Initiative and Transitional Youth Mobilizing for Change (TYM4Change).

Bakersfield College’s Umoja Community Program started off Black History Month with an engaging, interactive conference presented by the Program’s Club. BC Umoja students were involved at every level of the planning and execution including serving as mistresses of ceremonies. More than 170 high school and BC students as well as community members, faculty, administration, and staff participated in the 6th annual event held at BC.

Emotions ran high as renowned black artist Deidre Hathor unveiled her deeply moving installation, a poignant tribute to the resilient ancestors who paved the path to our present moment. On the morning of February 3rd, a diverse gathering of artists and supporters from our community converged to immerse themselves in what Deidre described as a “multi-sensory experience that you can feel literally and figuratively.” Displayed were works ranging from towering tributes to community pillars like Muhammad Ali to intimate reflections on fellow artist Frida Kahlo, with many pieces still evolving, inviting active participation from all community members.

Starting January 2024 individuals, regardless of immigration status, between the ages of 26 to 49 can be provided full coverage of Medi-Cal if they meet the eligibility criteria. All other Medi-Cal requirements still apply, including income eligibility. This new California law, Age 26-49 Adult Expansion, was introduced after Senate Bill 184 (Chapter 47, Statutes of 2022), Senate Bill 75, the Young Adult Expansion, and the Older Adult Expansion.
