The Effects of Redistricting and Redlining on BIPOC discussion held at Beale Memorial Library

Bakersfield, Calif. — The One Book Project (A partnership between Beale Memorial Library and California State Bakersfield) is helping to educate and raise awareness about issues and concerns that have affected BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color communities) for centuries.  A panel discussion, “Redistricting and Redlining Effects on BIPOC”, was held Thursday, October 18, in the Beale Library auditorium, 701 Truxtun Ave.

1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2022, an estimated 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. Breast cancer is always caused by a genetic abnormality, 85-90% of breast cancers are due to genetic abnormality that happens as a result of the aging process and the “wear and tear” of life in general. Women everywhere are fighting this battle and even a few men, and need our help. “Cancer doesn’t care, so you have to,” said Crystal Brown-Tatum. Let’s change “you” to “we”. So WE have to.

L.A. City Council Shutdown Because Council Members Caught on a Tape Exposing Racist Comments Won’t Resign

Last week, a recording anonymously posted on the social media site Reddit rocked the Los Angeles City Council.  On the recording, Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Hererra, City Council President Nury Martinez (District 6), and City Council members Kevin de León (District 14) and Gilbert Cedillo (District 1) can be heard discussing redistricting using crass terms and divisive, racist language.

Grammy Award Winner Jody Watley Joined Mayor Eric Garcetti for the Grand Opening of Metro K Line

Friday, October 7th, Metro opened its newest light rail line to the public, the 8.5 mile, $2 billion K Line, also known as the Crenshaw/LAX Line. Metro offered free rides all weekend over the entire system in celebration of the opening of the K Line. This was very timely, welcome news, for people attending the USC home game at the Los Angeles Coliseum, and Grand Park 10th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, as well as Ciclavia and Los Angeles RAMS home game at SoFi Stadium on Sunday.

The City of Inglewood and the California Department of Public Health Hosted a Fall Family Health Fest

On Saturday, September 24, 2022, Councilwoman Dionne Faulk of Inglewood District 4, in partnership with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Vaccinate ALL 58 campaign and KJLH-FM 102.3, presented the Fall Family Health Fest. The event took place at the center of Inglewood, across from Inglewood High School at Grevillea Park. The festival brought family fun, COVID-19 vaccines, and updated boosters for those 12 years and older as well as vaccines for children 6 months and older, along with health screenings, a kids’ zone, face paintings, music, dance and more to the community.
