Before taking the field against the Marquez High Warriors, the Garfield High Lady Bulldogs softball team paused to honor the educators who shaped their lives. In a heartfelt pre-game ceremony, each player stood proudly along the third-base line with a teacher who made a difference.
“If it weren’t for these teachers, some of you wouldn’t be on this team today,” said head coach Karla Bernal. “They’ve worked hard to support you on and off the field.”
A Personal Connection
Freshman Jenna Aguiar recognized math and computer science teacher Ari Gonzalez, praising her as “attentive and helpful.”
“This is my second year teaching computer science,” said Gonzalez. “I’m looking forward to delving into technology and helping students grow.”
Gonzalez, who also teaches in the school’s Magnet program, says she’s excited to uplift the Garfield community.
Aguiar’s connection to Garfield runs deep—her father Jorge (Class of 1992), sister (2015), and brother (2016) are all alumni.
“She admires Ms. Gonzalez and constantly talks about her,” said Jenna’s mother, Angelica. “The teacher puts her at ease and makes her want to learn more.”
College-Bound Stars and Favorite Teachers
Victoria “Coco” Prebe, recently named All-City shortstop, will attend Liberty University in Virginia to play under former UCLA All-American and Olympic gold medalist Dot Richardson.
“I wanted to get a Christian education, and I thought this would be a good place for that,” said Prebe.
She chose to honor Marc Shettleroe, who’s in his 28th year teaching U.S. and world history, government, and economics. He also coaches varsity baseball and football.
“I played college football and baseball in Kansas,” Shettleroe shared. “It’s an honor to wear the Navy and Crimson.”

From Auto Shop to the Classroom
Jose Rivera has been part of the Garfield community since 2010, first as a teaching assistant supporting CTE teachers in automotive, video production, and graphic design. A former technician at Hollywood Toyota, he began teaching full-time in August 2022.
“It’s been a positive experience,” said Rivera, who credits mentors like Mr. Villarreal, Mr. Carrillo, Mr. George, and Mr. Alvarez with his growth as an educator.
Serving East L.A. with Pride
Garfield High serves a student body where 93% come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, yet 38% participate in Advanced Placement programs. The school proudly maintains a 100% minority enrollment and a commitment to equity in education.
Coach Bernal, a Liberal Studies graduate from Cal State San Marcos, started as an LAUSD substitute before becoming a full-time PE teacher.
“I love working with high school students, whether through coaching or teaching,” she said. “My vision is to inspire students to reach their academic and life goals, no matter the obstacles.”
“It’s an honor to serve our East L.A. community and witness the growth our school has made academically,” she added.
Championship Legacy
The Lady Bulldogs are the reigning L.A. City Division I champions, adding to titles they won in 1995 (Division III) and 2022 (Division II). With community, education, and determination at the heart of their success, Garfield’s players and teachers continue to lead by example.
