The way Sheldon Haleck’s parents see it, the 38-year-old’s only crime was jaywalking. But that March night in 2015, after Honolulu police found him behaving erratically, they pepper-sprayed him, shocked him with a Taser, and restrained him. Haleck became unresponsive and was taken to a hospital. Before his parents could get from their home in Utah to Hawaii, the former Hawaii Air National Guardsman was taken off life support.

The Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) celebrated the 41st anniversary of the Annual Day of the Drum Festival, and the 46th anniversary of the Annual Simon Rodia Watts Towers Jazz Festival. DCA and the Friends of the Watts Towers Arts Center hosted the multicultural dance and music performance at the Saturday, September 30, for the Watts Towers Day of the Drum Festival and Sunday, October 1, for the Simon Rodia Watts Towers Jazz Festival.

California Leads The Way To A 28th Amendment For Gun Safety

In June, Governor Gavin Newsom proposed a 28th amendment to the constitution in regard to gun safety. To pass the amendment, an Article 5 convention is needed to propose the change to the Constitution. The release explains that California is the first state to do this with a joint resolution.

Mckinley Elementary Combats Low Attendance Rates With Walk To School Event

McKinley Elementary School students, parents, guardians, and teachers were welcomed to class by Bakersfield High School’s (BHS) cheer team and community volunteers. Friday was a Walk to School event that encouraged students to come to school while gaining community awareness regarding the lack of bus routes to take participating students to school like many other Bakersfield elementary schoolers utilize.
